Sumaya Mahomed is a trusted Sustainability Project Manager with over 11 years’ experience within
the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy field Policy and business development through
strategically driving energy efficiency and renewable energy training and implementation within
Southern African Cities. The City of Cape Town won numerous awards based on the energy efficiency
and renewable energy programme, Sumaya managed during her tenor at the City of Cape Town
namely; ESKOM’s 2012 eta Award for the residential category for the City of Cape Town’s Energy
Efficiency program, Honorary award from World Green Building Council for Energy Efficiency within
City operations program, March 2014 . Sumaya received recognition award under the Mayor’s award
program at the City of Cape Town as the best capital project manager in renewable energy and energy
efficiency projects and was the lead on C40’s Municipal Energy Efficiency Network during 2016 and
2017.
She developed and successfully implemented renewable energy and energy efficiency projects
such as 1 MW of rooftop solar PV projects, over 80 energy efficiency buildings projects and works on
various integrated energy projects in East Africa aimed at solving the energy access agenda. Sumaya
played a key role in the establishment of the Uganda, Association of Energy Engineers Chapter being
established and is on the Board of Directors for the Institute of Energy Professionals Africa (IEPA).
TheInstitute of Energy Professionals Africa (IEPA) represents the AEE in the Sub-Sahara Africa region
through Certification, Training, Examinations, Projects and regional development of AEE Chapters and
educational programs and professionalises energy and resource efficiency education in the region.
Sumaya is currently the Director of Uganda for Power for All and is the Utilities 2.0 Pilot Manager
and is responsible for the strategic and operational design, and day-today management of this
integrated energy project. Utilities 2.0 is an integrated energy project that aims to create a
collaborative framework enabling a Utility and decentralized renewable energy to work together and
accelerate energy access in a least cost and efficient way.
Sumaya is also a Director at WrapZERO who is a women owned and women led consultancy that
promotes and enables resource efficiency, waste reduction and socially responsible decision-making
in the production of film, TV, commercials and stills industry. Wrap Zero is committed to making the
Film Industry of South Africa sustainable.
Sumaya Mahomed has a background in Chemical Engineering, Post Graduate Diploma in Sustainable
Engineering and a Masters in Sustainable Development and is currently completing her Master in
Business Administration at the Edinburgh Business School. Sumaya’s publications include: “Building
Energy Efficiency in City of Cape Town operations: the role of the energy intermediary in book with
title: "Mainstreaming Climate Change in Urban Development Lessons from Cape Town" and an
“Assessment of City of Cape Town’s energy efficiency within its internal operations”.
